How to Add 3D Text to Video Footage in After Effects

Track your camera, place extruded 3D text into real footage, and ground it with shadows — the full After Effects workflow, plus why some shots won't track.

You drop a text layer over your footage, the camera pans, and the text slides across the frame like a sticker on the lens. For text that looks planted in the scene — standing in a field, sitting on a street — After Effects needs to reconstruct the camera move that filmed the shot. That’s what the built-in 3D Camera Tracker does, and with the Cinema 4D renderer for extrusion, it turns a flat title into a solid object your camera moves around.

How Camera Tracking Actually Works

The tracker analyzes how hundreds of small detail points shift between frames. Points near the camera move more than distant ones — that difference, parallax, is enough to solve where the camera was and how it moved. Any 3D layer you then add is filmed by the same move as the original footage, so it locks into the scene. It also tells you which shots will fail: no parallax, no solve.

Step 1: Track the Camera

  1. Select your footage layer and choose Animation > Track Camera (or apply Effect > Perspective > 3D Camera Tracker).
  2. The effect analyzes in the background — a minute or two for a typical HD clip — then scatters colored track points across the frame.
  3. Check the average error in Effect Controls. Under 1 pixel is usable; the lower, the tighter the lock.

Hover between track points and After Effects draws a target showing the plane it detects — the ground, a wall, a tabletop. Scrub the shot and make sure the points you plan to use stick to the same physical spot throughout; points that swim are lying to you.

Step 2: Create the Text and Camera

Select three or more track points on the surface where the text should stand (click one, shift-click neighbors), right-click the target and choose Create Text and Camera. After Effects adds a 3D Camera that replicates the real camera move, and a 3D text layer positioned on that surface.

Play the shot — the text should already hold its position. Text created on the ground plane often lies flat; set X Rotation to -90° to stand it up, then reposition with the 3D axis arrows, not by dragging in screen space.

Step 3: Extrude with the Cinema 4D Renderer

Flat text in a tracked scene still reads as flat. Real depth needs extrusion:

  1. Open Composition Settings > 3D Renderer and switch from Classic 3D to Cinema 4D.
  2. Select the text layer and open Geometry Options in the timeline.
  3. Raise Extrusion Depth — 20–60 works for most title sizes — and add a small Bevel so edges catch light.

The Cinema 4D renderer trades some features for depth — blend modes and layer effects are limited compared to Classic 3D — so plan to do color work on an adjustment layer above, or precompose.

Step 4: Ground It with Light and Shadow

An object with no shadow floats, however good the track is. Three moves sell the composite:

  • Add a light. Layer > New > Light, Spot or Point, positioned roughly where the real scene’s light comes from. Enable Casts Shadows on the light and in the text layer’s Material Options.
  • Add a shadow catcher. Make a white solid, enable its 3D switch, lay it flat along the ground under the text, and turn on Accepts Shadows in its Material Options so it displays the text’s shadow on the “ground”.
  • Match the grade. Sample the footage’s blacks and highlights — pure-black text never sits in a warm, lifted scene. A 0.5–1 pixel blur on the text matches the footage’s natural softness.

When the Track Fails — and What to Do

Two shot types defeat the tracker:

  • Nodal pans — the camera rotates on a tripod without moving through space. No position change means no parallax, so there’s nothing to solve.
  • Low-detail or motion-blurred footage — blank walls, sky, water, and heavy blur starve the tracker of sharp points.

For a locked-off tripod shot you don’t need a tracker at all — position the 3D text once and it holds. One last detail: extruded text shows compression artifacts on its clean edges before anything else in the frame, so treat the bitrates in best YouTube export settings as your floor.

Why is the 3D Camera Tracker greyed out or failing to analyze?

The footage layer must be selected, and the analysis needs to finish before you touch the timeline. If it errors, precompose the raw clip and apply the tracker to that. Variable-frame-rate footage (common from phones) should be conformed to constant frame rate first.

Do I need Cinema 4D installed to use the Cinema 4D renderer?

No. The Cinema 4D renderer is built into After Effects as a composition renderer setting — it’s what enables Extrusion Depth and bevels on text and shape layers. Cinema 4D Lite, the separate modeling application bundled with After Effects, isn’t needed for extruded titles.

Can I do this without After Effects?

How do I make the 3D text appear behind objects in the scene?

Duplicate the footage layer, put the copy above the text, and mask just the foreground object — rotoscoping it if it moves. The text now passes behind the masked object, the biggest realism upgrade after shadows.
